Japan Announces Visa Fees to Increase Fivefold

On June 19, 2026, Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi officially announced a significant increase in visa fees for foreign nationals, effective July 1, 2026, with a fivefold increase. This is the first time Japan has adjusted visa fees since 1978.

Specific Price Adjustments:

Single-entry visa: Increased from 3,000 yen to 15,000 yen

Multiple-entry visa: Increased from 6,000 yen to 30,000 yen

Applicable Rules:

The new fees only apply to visa applications submitted on or after July 1, 2026. Applications submitted before July 1 will still be processed at the original price. A rush to apply for visas before the price increase has already occurred in China.

Main Reasons for Price Adjustment

Japanese officials stated that this move was to address rising prices, cover administrative costs for visa processing, align fees with those of G7 countries, and allocate some revenue to alleviate the pressure on public resources caused by “over-tourism.” It is estimated that this will increase Japan’s fiscal revenue by approximately 120 billion yen annually.
