Federal police nab multi-million-euro fraudster at Frankfurt Airport
German federal police scored a major arrest at Frankfurt Airport, taking a suspected multi-million-euro fraudster into custody the moment he stepped off a flight from Dubai.
According to federal police, the 29-year-old Albanian national was arrested on Saturday, 4 July. An arrest warrant had been issued by the public prosecutor’s office on charges of multi-million-euro fraud. Investigations show that the suspect belongs to an organised crime ring that defrauded victims of at least tens of millions of euros – and that’s just in Germany alone.
The scam worked like this: the criminal organisation faked investments in various assets, convincing victims to hand over money – but the funds were never actually invested and were simply pocketed instead. Federal police investigators had apparently gotten wind of the man’s travel plans and intercepted him right on the aircraft after his flight from Dubai touched down.
The suspect has already been brought before a judge at the Frankfurt district court. According to police, the man faces up to 15 years in prison – and that’s just on the Albanian side.
Over the same weekend, federal police arrested another suspect – a 30-year-old woman who allegedly tricked an 80-year-old senior into believing she was in a romantic relationship with him, then fleeced him of cash and valuables. She too has been brought before a judge – at the Koblenz district court – and is now in pre-trial detention.
Federal police stressed that both cases show one thing clearly: law enforcement will stay hot on the trail of fraudsters – no matter what tricks they use to hook their victims.
