More than 58,000 Ethiopians have been relocated due to the earthquake
According to the Ethiopian National Disaster Risk Management Committee on the 9th, more than 58,000 people in Afar and Oromia states have been relocated to temporary shelters due to the earthquake.
Affected by the earthquake on January 4, the Ethiopian National Disaster Risk Management Committee held an emergency meeting on the 9th to discuss the current earthquake risks. Experts believe that the recent seismic activity in Ethiopia is mainly related to the formation of the East African Rift Valley. At present, the earthquake has not triggered a volcanic eruption, but smoke and hot water have been found to be gushing out of the ground in some areas.
Since September 2024, earthquakes have occurred frequently in central and eastern Ethiopia. In the early morning of January 4, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake occurred in central and eastern Ethiopia, and the capital Addis Ababa felt the earthquake significantly. So far, there have been no reports of casualties, but some institutions, facilities, roads and factories in the earthquake-stricken areas have been damaged to varying degrees.
