Nikkei:US to ban imports of connected cars with Chinese and Russian parts
According to Japanese media Nikkei, the U.S. Department of Commerce said on September 23 that it would ban the import and sale of vehicles using parts and software produced in China and Russia for “connected cars” that provide driving assistance by connecting to the Internet.
The targets are parts and software related to the communication functions of connected cars and software related to autonomous driving systems. Automakers may be forced to change their procurement areas.
The regulations on software will apply to models produced in 2027, and the regulations on parts will apply to models produced in 2030. For cars without a production year, they will be included in the scope of control from January 2029.
In addition to the “telematic control unit (TCU)” that connects the car to the outside via the network, it is expected that the control targets will also involve parts and software related to Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and satellite communications.
