Global Food Prices Rise in March

International Business News  –  A report released by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on April 3rd showed that the global food price index rose 2.4% month-on-month in March 2026, marking the second consecutive month of increase, mainly driven by rising energy costs due to the conflict in the Middle East. Vegetable oils (+5.1%) and sugar (+7.2%) led the rise, while wheat increased by 4.3%, and rice decreased by 3%.

Supply Chain and Future Risks

Fertilizer Cost Pressures: Rising energy and fertilizer prices may force farmers to reduce inputs, threatening 2026-2027 production, especially in poorer countries reliant on imports.

Key Waterways Disrupted: Disruptions to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz exacerbate difficulties in the flow of energy and food, further driving up costs.

FAO Warns: If the conflict lasts longer than 40 days, reduced planting area or conversion to low-energy crops will lead to long-term supply shortages.
