Foreign Ministry Survey: China is ASEAN’s Most Important Partner

The Japanese Foreign Ministry recently released the results of a public opinion survey conducted in the United States, ASEAN, and India regarding Japan. When asked which ASEAN member states would be important partners in the future (multiple selections allowed), China ranked first with 52%, followed by Japan with 45%. In India, Russia ranked first with 59%, followed closely by Japan with 57%.

This result reflects that China and Russia still wield considerable influence in ASEAN and India, with which Japan is actively building relationships.

In the United States, when asked about their most important partners in Asia and the surrounding region, Japan ranked first with 50%, followed by China at 17%, India at 16%, Australia at 8%, and South Korea at 3%.

This survey will be conducted online in October-November 2025. The survey respondents were 3,000 from ASEAN, 2,200 from India, and 200 from the United States.
