Fujifilm to build semiconductor material factory in India
Fujifilm will build a semiconductor material factory in India. Aiming to start production around 2028, it will supply materials for semiconductor projects supported by the Indian government as a national policy. Against the backdrop of China-US confrontation, India is improving its production system for high-tech equipment, and Japanese companies with advantages in materials and manufacturing equipment in the semiconductor field are also welcoming business opportunities.
Fujifilm will acquire land for the construction of a factory in Gujarat, western India, in 2025 and start construction as early as 2026. The total investment is several billion yen, and it will consider producing products such as chemicals and developers used to remove impurities in the semiconductor manufacturing process.
First, it will supply products to Tata Electronics, a semiconductor manufacturing company under the Indian Tata Group. Tata Electronics is working with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (PSMC) to build a “front-end” factory for semiconductors in Gujarat. It will start production as early as 2026, mainly producing non-cutting-edge semiconductors for automotive and other uses.
Both the Indian government and Tata Electronics have stated that they will build a semiconductor supply chain including raw materials in the country from the perspective of economic security.
At present, some raw materials for semiconductor materials are produced in China. In order to avoid dependence on China, India is striving to achieve localization.
Before its own factories in India go into production, Fujifilm is expected to supply products to India from its existing production bases in Europe, the United States and Asia. Fujifilm also plans to supply products to other semiconductor factories in India besides Tata Electronics, and is considering exporting to Asian countries such as Singapore.
