China increased its holdings of US Treasury bonds by US$23.5 billion
On April 16, local time, data released by the US Treasury Department showed that in February 2025, the top three overseas creditors of US debt, Japan, China, and the United Kingdom, all increased their holdings of US Treasury bonds.
The US Treasury Department’s February 2025 International Capital Flows Report (TIC) showed that Japan increased its holdings of US$46.6 billion in US Treasury bonds in February, with a holding size of US$1,125.9 billion, and it is still the largest creditor of the United States.
China increased its holdings of US$23.5 billion in US Treasury bonds to US$784.3 billion in February, increasing its holdings for the second consecutive month.
As the second largest overseas holder of US Treasury bonds, China’s US Treasury holdings have been below US$1 trillion since April 2022, and have generally been on a downward trend. In January 2025, China increased its holdings of US$1.8 billion in US Treasury bonds. In 2022, 2023, and 2024, China reduced its holdings of US Treasury bonds by US$173.2 billion, US$50.8 billion, and US$57.3 billion, respectively.
The UK increased its holdings of U.S. Treasuries by $10.1 billion to $750.3 billion in February, ranking third in terms of holdings.
