China’s new national standard for electric vehicle batteries will be implemented on July 1, 2026

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China recently announced that China will begin to implement the new national standard for power batteries for electric vehicles from July 1, 2026.

The standard is a mandatory national standard organized and formulated by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology – “Safety Requirements for Power Batteries for Electric Vehicles”, including 7 single-cell tests and 17 battery pack or system tests.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology stated that this revision mainly added test items such as battery bottom impact test and safety test after fast charging cycle, strengthened safety requirements such as heat diffusion, and raised the alarm 5 minutes before power battery fire and explosion to no fire and no explosion, reducing the incidence of power battery spontaneous combustion accidents from the product design end, and further protecting the safety of consumers’ lives and property.
