Iran Confirms Supreme Leader Candidates

According to Iranian sources on March 4th, Iran has confirmed several candidates for Supreme Leader and is about to elect a new leader.

Ahmed Khatami, a member of the Council of Experts responsible for electing the new Supreme Leader, told Iranian state television on March 4th that Iran is about to elect a new Supreme Leader to succeed the assassinated Ayatollah Khamenei. Khatami said, “The Supreme Leader candidate is about to be determined; we are close to reaching a conclusion, but the domestic situation is in a state of war.”

The Council of Experts is the governing body responsible for electing, supervising, and removing the Supreme Leader.

According to sources, Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba Khamenei, is safe. Reports suggest he is widely considered a potential successor to the Supreme Leader.

Previously, informed sources indicated that the Supreme Leader election might be held in person after the funeral of the late Supreme Leader Khamenei. According to Iranian sources, Iran will hold a farewell ceremony for the late Supreme Leader Khamenei on the evening of March 4th, which will last for three days.
