China’s GDP to Grow 5% in 2025
Beijing, January 19 (China News Service) – Statistics released on the 19th show that China’s GDP is projected to grow by 5% year-on-year in 2025.
On the same day, the State Council Information Office held a press conference on the performance of the national economy in 2025. Kang Yi, Director of the National Bureau of Statistics, stated that in 2025, facing complex changes in the domestic and international economic environment, China’s national economy has persevered under pressure, moving towards new and better development, achieving new results in high-quality development, and successfully completing the main goals and tasks of economic and social development.
Preliminary calculations show that the annual GDP will reach 140,187.9 billion yuan (RMB), an increase of 5.0% year-on-year at constant prices.
By industry, the added value of the primary industry was 9,334.7 billion yuan, an increase of 3.9% year-on-year; the added value of the secondary industry was 49,965.3 billion yuan, an increase of 4.5%; and the added value of the tertiary industry was 80,887.9 billion yuan, an increase of 5.4%. Looking at the quarterly figures, GDP grew by 5.4% year-on-year in the first quarter, 5.2% in the second quarter, 4.8% in the third quarter, and 4.5% in the fourth quarter. On a quarter-on-quarter basis, GDP grew by 1.2% in the fourth quarter.
Total grain output for the year was 714.88 million tons, an increase of 8.38 million tons, or 1.2%, over the previous year. The added value of industrial enterprises above designated size increased by 5.9% year-on-year. The added value of the service sector increased by 5.4% year-on-year. Total retail sales of consumer goods reached 50,120.2 billion yuan, an increase of 3.7% year-on-year.
Fixed asset investment (excluding rural households) totaled 48,518.6 billion yuan, a decrease of 3.8% year-on-year. Excluding real estate development investment, fixed asset investment decreased by 0.5%. Total import and export volume reached 45,468.7 billion yuan, an increase of 3.8% year-on-year.
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) remained unchanged year-on-year. Core CPI, excluding food and energy prices, rose by 0.7%, an increase of 0.2 percentage points over the previous year. The producer price index for industrial inputs decreased by 3.0% year-on-year.
The average urban surveyed unemployment rate nationwide was 5.2% for the year. The per capita disposable income of residents nationwide was 43,377 yuan, a real increase of 5.0% after adjusting for price factors. By place of residence, the per capita disposable income of urban residents was 56,502 yuan, a real increase of 4.2%, while the per capita disposable income of rural residents was 24,456 yuan, a real increase of 6.0%.
At the end of 2025, the national population (including the population of 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities directly under the central government, and active military personnel, but excluding residents of Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, and foreign nationals residing in the 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities directly under the central government) was 1,404.89 million, a decrease of 3.39 million from the end of the previous year.
