Huawei’s Patent Revenue Reaches $630 Million in 2024

On November 11th, Huawei held an “Innovation and Intellectual Property Forum” in Beijing. Huawei stated that as a top intellectual property holder in China, it earned $630 million in patent licensing revenue in 2024, representing a year-on-year increase of approximately 10%. Huawei will accelerate the research and development of technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI).

Huawei’s Chief Legal Officer stated, “Open innovation is a crucial force driving social development and technological progress, and it is also in Huawei’s DNA. Huawei has always practiced the concept of ‘openness,’ driving innovation through openness. At the same time, Huawei emphasizes the protection of its own intellectual property rights and respects the intellectual property rights of others, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets.” In 2024, Huawei filed 6,600 patent applications under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), which stipulates that an application filed in one member country is considered applicable to multiple countries, a slight increase from the previous year.

Since 2014, except for 2016, Huawei has ranked first globally in annual patent applications. It holds approximately 150,000 international patents in total.

At this forum, Huawei also released its latest internal inventions, including a high-performance AI server cluster using self-developed AI semiconductors and the operating system “Harmony” for its self-developed smartphones.

In 2024, Huawei invested approximately 180 billion yuan in R&D, a 9% year-on-year increase, equivalent to about 21% of its sales revenue. This proportion, previously only around 10%, has risen to over 20% in recent years. Against the backdrop of fierce competition between China and the US over high technology, Huawei is continuously advancing its technological research and development.
