Toyota Motor’s global sales reached 5.26 million vehicles from April to September
Toyota Japan announced data on October 27th, showing that its global sales (including Lexus) for the period increased 5% year-on-year to 5,267,216 units, a record high for the period. In its core market, the United States, demand for hybrid vehicles (HVs) remained strong despite the Trump administration’s high tariffs. Furthermore, Toyota maintained strong momentum in China by promoting sales of pure electric vehicles (EVs).
Toyota forecasts sales of 10.4 million vehicles, a record high, for fiscal 2025. Sales progressed on schedule in the first half of the fiscal year.
Overseas sales increased 6% year-on-year to 4,553,249 units, a record high. Sales were driven by the United States, which saw an 11% increase to 1,295,606 units. Sales also contributed to a rebound following the recall and suspension of production of some Toyota models in the previous year.
Toyota’s vehicle exports from Japan to the United States increased 21% to 304,151 units. The Trump administration imposed a 25% tariff on Japanese autos in April, reducing it to 15% in September. Toyota is increasing exports in response to strong US demand, but the continued high tariff costs are the main reason for lower profits.
In China, where competition with local automakers is increasingly fierce, Toyota’s sales increased 6% from April to September, reaching 914,342 vehicles. Strong sales of the new bZ3X EV and hybrid vehicles, launched in March, were boosted by promotional measures coupled with government subsidies.
Sales in other regions, including Europe and Asia, also exceeded the same period last year. Sales in Japan declined slightly due to production suspensions caused by the massive earthquake near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula in late July.
Toyota’s global production increased 6% from April to September, reaching 4,985,122 vehicles. Production continues to recover from recalls and certification violations that occurred in 2024. Production in Japan increased by 3% to 1,585,622 vehicles, and in the United States by 14% to 716,614 vehicles.
Toyota aims to reach global production of 10 million vehicles by fiscal 2025. Production in Japan was temporarily halted due to the earthquake in the Kamchatka Peninsula, but it appears to be proceeding largely as planned.
