Toyota’s subsidiary to produce EV batteries in China
Prime Planet Energy & Solutions (PPES, Chuo-ku, Tokyo), Toyota’s battery development and manufacturing subsidiary, revealed on July 15 that it will produce on-board batteries for pure electric vehicles (EVs) in China. A new battery plant will be built in Dalian, Liaoning Province, with an investment of 3.7 billion yuan. The start of production has not yet been disclosed.
Construction of the new plant started at the end of June and covers an area of about 230,000 square meters.
The Dalian Municipal Government, which approved the development of the plant, said it took only three months from the signing of the project to the start of construction.
PPES was jointly funded by Toyota and Panasonic (now Panasonic Holdings) in 2020.
PPES already has three factories in Dalian that produce on-board batteries for plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHVs), and previously did not have a battery factory for pure electric vehicles.
