Japan approves 95% tariff on Chinese graphite electrodes

The Japanese Ministry of Finance’s review committee approved the policy of imposing anti-dumping tariffs on Chinese graphite electrodes on March 12. A 95.2% tariff will be imposed on the import price for a period of 4 months. The Japanese Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry will complete the investigation of the factual relationship by late October and re-evaluate whether it is necessary to continue to impose tariffs.

The departmental meeting of the Tariff and Foreign Exchange Review Committee held on March 12 approved the policy of increasing tariffs. In the mid-term report of the investigation, the two departments concluded that it can be determined that low-priced imports equivalent to dumping and substantial damage to Japan’s domestic industry can be determined.

Japan currently imposes tariffs of 2.1% or 3.3% on Chinese graphite electrodes.
