Google Maps has renamed the “Gulf of Mexico” to the “Gulf of the United States”

On February 10, local time, Google announced that it had followed the GNIS (Geographic Names Information System) and officially renamed the “Gulf of Mexico” to the “Gulf of the United States” in the United States. Google said that users using maps in the United States will see the “Gulf of the United States”, Mexican users will see the “Gulf of Mexico”, and users in other regions will see both names.

On January 20, local time, US President Trump signed an executive order to rename the “Gulf of Mexico” to the “Gulf of the United States”. Trump said that the Gulf of Mexico has always been an “indispensable asset” to the United States as it grows and develops. Mexican President Sheinbaum later responded that US President Trump’s order to rename the “Gulf of Mexico” to the “Gulf of the United States” only involves the United States, and for Mexico and the world, the “Gulf of Mexico” is still called the “Gulf of Mexico”.
