Toyota’s new car sales in China increased by 15% in February

Japan’s Toyota sold 95,800 new cars in China in February, up 15% from the same period last year. Efforts to promote replacement have paid off. On the other hand, Honda and Nissan failed to increase sales in the fierce competition with Chinese companies, and their sales fell by double digits.

According to Toyota’s joint ventures, “FAW Toyota”, a joint venture with First Automobile Group, increased by 41.6% to 41,400 units. “GAC Toyota”, a joint venture with Guangzhou Automobile Group, decreased by 3% to 42,000 units. Sales of the high-end car brand “Lexus” increased by 23% to 11,300 units.

From FAW Toyota’s point of view, sales of sedans “Corolla” and “Avalon” increased. Lexus also implemented measures to promote new car replacements for a limited time, which achieved results.

Honda’s new car sales in China in February announced on March 7 were 33,866 units, a decrease of 25.6%. The sales of “GAC Honda”, a joint venture with Guangzhou Automobile, were 19,091 units, a decrease of 21%. The sales of “Dongfeng Honda”, a joint venture with Dongfeng Motor Group, were 14,775 units, a decrease of 30.8%. Nissan also announced on the same day that its sales fell by 24.7% to 31,508 units.

China’s Spring Festival holiday is between January and February, and the time varies from year to year, so the monthly sales will also vary significantly. According to the cumulative sales from January to February, which are less affected by the long holiday, Toyota’s new car sales fell by 3.9% year-on-year to 232,300 units; Honda fell by 29.8% to 102,756 units; Nissan fell by 28.4% to 76,926 units. All three companies experienced negative growth.
