Panama and Denmark strongly respond to Trump’s remarks
Panamanian President Mulino posted on social media on the 5th that US President Trump “lied again” and the Panama Canal is not in the so-called “reclaiming” process. On the same day, Danish Defense Minister Terels Len Poulsen said that the US annexation of Greenland “will not happen.”
US President Trump said in a speech to the US Senate and House of Representatives on the 4th local time that the US government will “reclaim” the Panama Canal, “We have already started to do so.” He also said that the United States “will get Greenland no matter what.”
Mulino said that the Panamanian government and all Panamanian people “firmly reject this another humiliation of the truth and national dignity,” and “the canal belongs to Panama and will always belong to Panama.”
Mulino also said that when he had previously met with visiting US Secretary of State Rubio and other US officials, the issue of “reclaiming the canal” had never been mentioned.
In an interview with Danish media on the 5th, Poulsen talked about Trump’s latest statement on Greenland, emphasizing that “the United States cannot and will never have the right to decide and acquire this part of the Kingdom of Denmark”. On the same day, Greenland’s Prime Minister Egede said that Greenland “is not for sale and cannot be taken away”.
After officially taking office as US President at the beginning of this year, Trump has repeatedly stated that he wants to get Greenland and “take back” the Panama Canal, and claimed that he does not rule out the possibility of using force. This move has aroused strong opposition from Denmark and Panama.
