Musk supports the US withdrawal from NATO and the United Nations
According to the website of Radio France Internationale, Musk expressed his support for the US withdrawal from NATO and the United Nations on the social media platform X on the evening of the 1st. He wrote: “I agree” when forwarding a post that read “It’s time to withdraw from NATO and the United Nations”.
The report said that Musk’s statement is consistent with the calls from politicians including Republican Senator Mike Lee of Utah for the United States to reconsider its commitment to NATO. Mike Lee has long criticized NATO, calling it a “relic of the Cold War” and believing that NATO “must stop”. He claimed that NATO is a good deal for Europe but an “unfair deal” for the United States, believing that US resources are being used to protect Europe without much direct benefit to US security.
Earlier, several Republican lawmakers also submitted a motion on the US withdrawal from the United Nations, claiming that the United Nations does not meet the Trump administration’s “America First” agenda. The report said that Musk’s latest statement came at a time when the Trump administration was widely discussing the future role of the United States in NATO and international institutions.
Although Trump himself has not explicitly stated that he wants to withdraw from NATO, he has repeatedly pressured European allies to increase their defense spending and warned that the United States should not bear the financial burden of NATO alone. The report believes that as a key figure in the Trump administration, Musk’s influence on Trump’s decision-making is huge. His support for the call to withdraw from NATO may indicate that the momentum of the shift towards a more isolationist foreign policy is growing within the White House.
