Mexican President: Proposes constitutional amendment! Prevent US from infringing sovereignty

After the US government designated several Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations, Mexican President Sheinbaum announced on the 20th that she would propose constitutional reform to further protect Mexico’s sovereignty.

“In the face of this (US) designation, we want to make it clear that we will not negotiate with sovereignty,” Sheinbaum said at a regular press conference that day. “This must not be an opportunity for the United States to infringe on our sovereignty.”

According to Reuters, the United States designated the Sinaloa drug cartel and several other Mexican drug cartel groups as terrorist organizations on the 19th. Some Mexican officials are worried that US President Trump may be laying the groundwork for unilateral military action in Mexico. He mentioned this idea many times during his campaign.

Mexico has always opposed the United States’ designation of drug cartels as terrorist organizations on the grounds that drug cartels are driven by interests, while terrorist organizations are often motivated by political purposes. According to Sheinbaum, the United States made this decision without consulting Mexico.

According to the Associated Press, Sheinbaum said that Mexico does not allow outsiders to intervene in investigations or prosecutions without the permission of the Mexican government and without cooperation with the Mexican government.

Sheinbaum said she would also propose another constitutional reform to increase penalties for Mexicans and foreigners involved in arms smuggling. Gun violence is one of Mexico’s most intractable social problems, and most of the guns used in criminal activities are illegally imported from the United States.
