On January 7, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake occurred in Dingri County, Shigatse City, Xizhang(Tibet)

The 1.7 Dingri earthquake in Shigatse occurred on January 7, 2025, Beijing time.

At 8:11 on January 7, a magnitude 3.3 earthquake occurred in Dingri County, Shigatse City, Xizhang(28.53 degrees north latitude, 87.42 degrees east longitude), with a focal depth of 10 kilometers.

At 9:05 on January 7, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake occurred in Dingri County, with a focal depth of 10 kilometers and an epicenter at 28.50 degrees north latitude and 87.45 degrees east longitude. The epicenter of the Dingri 6.8 magnitude earthquake is located in the Lhasa block of the Qinghai-Xizhang(Tibet) Plateau. The nearest fault to the earthquake is the Dengmo Co fault, which is about 11 kilometers away. The focal mechanism is a tensile rupture.

As of 13:00 on January 7, 2025, a total of 16 aftershocks of magnitude 3 or above were recorded, including 13 earthquakes of magnitude 3.0-3.9 and 3 earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or above, namely, magnitude 4.4 at 9:24, magnitude 4.2 at 9:37 and magnitude 4.1 at 9:43.

On January 7, 2025, the Office of the Earthquake Relief Headquarters of the State Council of China and the Ministry of Emergency Management have upgraded the national earthquake emergency response level 3 to level 2, and the Office of the National Disaster Prevention, Reduction and Relief Committee and the Ministry of Emergency Management have upgraded the national disaster relief emergency response level 4 to level 3. The China Earthquake Administration launched a level 2 emergency service response to the earthquake in Dingri County, Xizhang.

The National Health Commission dispatched medical experts to the earthquake-stricken areas in Xizhang(Tibet) for support.

As of 15:00 on January 7, 2025, the earthquake has caused 95 deaths and 130 injuries.
