Wang Yi held a Chinese and foreign press conference to comprehensively explain China’s position on the Taiwan issue

In the afternoon of August 5, 2022 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a press conference for Chinese and foreign media after attending the East Asia Cooperation Series Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Phnom Penh.

Wang Yi said I would like to elaborate China’s position on the Taiwan issue, considering that the U.S. side has just spread a lot of false information and untruths in this regard, it is all the more necessary for us to tell the facts to set the record straight.

Wang Yi said that U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, in spite of China’s firm opposition and repeated representations, actually made a blatant visit to China’s Taiwan region with the connivance and arrangement of the U.S. government. It is only natural that China should respond firmly. Our position is legitimate, reasonable and lawful, our measures are firm, strong and proportionate, and our military exercises are open, transparent and professional, in line with domestic law, international law and international practice, with the aim of sending a warning to the perpetrators and punishing the “Taiwan independence” forces. We will firmly safeguard China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, resolutely deter the U.S. from “using Taiwan to control China”, and resolutely shatter the Taiwan authorities’ illusion of “relying on the U.S. for independence”. At the same time, we are also upholding the basic norms of international law and international relations, especially the most important international law rule of non-interference in internal affairs as stipulated in the United Nations Charter. If the principle of non-interference in internal affairs is ignored and abandoned, the world will return to the law of the jungle, and the United States will be even more reckless in bullying other countries, especially small and medium-sized countries, with its so-called position of strength. We cannot allow such things to happen, and all countries should also unite to not allow such things to happen and not allow the process of human civilization to regress.

Wang Yi said that because of this, more than 100 countries have already come forward publicly to reaffirm their firm pursuit of the one-China policy and to understand and support China’s legitimate position. UN Secretary-General Guterres has clearly emphasized that the UN will continue to adhere to UNGA Resolution 2758. At its core is the one-China principle, that is, there is only one China in the world, the Government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing all of China, and Taiwan is a part of China. This is the common voice of justice in the international community.

After coming to power, Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has been promoting “progressive Taiwan independence”, “de-Chinaization”, and creating “two Chinas” and “one China, one Taiwan” on various occasions. Is this not a blatant change to the status quo? If Dr. Sun Yat-sen were aware of this, he would point his finger at Tsai Ing-wen’s nose and call her an unworthy descendant.
